This series of Snake Vertebrae necklaces are inspired by visits to the Museum where my jaw would drop as I studied the intricate nature of the snake vertebrae. This work was created using hand made African sand cast beads with antique record phono beads, they are both threaded upon a cotton/polyester blend chord for extra strength. I have tied the strand using a trusty reef knot, something I learnt from my sailing days, there is no way this beauty will come undone.
Using these carefully sourced materials I create patterns, texture and mood in methodical works which take considerable time and care. Whilst my hands work busily I have an opportunity for my mind to wonder, dream and consider many aspects of life. I have always found sanctuary in the act of making and feel very privileged to have been gifted a relationship between self and material as part of my everyday existence. I have been making feverishly throughout these COVID times and feel blessed to have creativity at my core. These works are part of what I have titled The Isolation Series.
Vertebrae - each of the series of small bones forming the backbone, having several projections for articulation and muscle attachment, and a hole through which the spinal cord passes.
White Sandcast and Red Phono Neckwear is a 95cm strand.
